What is a Logitech Unifying receiver and how can you benefit from it?

You may have noticed the Unifying icon and text on your new Logitech purchase and are wondering what it is. In simple terms, it is a more convenient way for your multiple Logitech computer peripherals to connect to your computer that can be useful for users and especially businesses. We will explore the ins and outs of Logitech’s proprietary keyboard and mouse USB dongle in this short article.

What does it do?

If you have a Logitech keyboard and mouse that both have the Unifying icon on them, it means that you will only be needing a single USB port to connect both of them to your computer. Supported Logitech keyboards and mice can connect to a unifying receiver that didn’t come in the box. You can store the second USB dongle in case you lose the other one or if it breaks or stops working. There are separate benefits for businesses buying Unifying supported keyboards and mice which we will explore further down in the article.

How to use the Logitech Unifying receiver

The process of connecting extra peripherals to your Logitech Unifying receiver is as easy as it can be. You first need to download the Logitech Unifying software, and then disconnect your keyboard’s Unifying receiver while keeping your mouse’s connected (or keep the keyboard’s receiver connected if you’re comfortable operating the computer with no mouse for a minute). When you launch the software, it asks you to turn the device you want to add to the receiver off and back on,  test it out to make sure it’s connected and working, and that’s pretty much it! You can add up to six peripherals to a single USB Unifying receiver.

Secure and reliable connectivity

Logitech’s advanced 2.4 GHz connectivity not only provides reliability to every click and keystroke, but it also adds industry-standard 128-bit AES encryption between the peripheral of choice and the receiver. It registers every input even in the busiest of wireless environments, without dropping the signal. If you have a more modern laptop that only comes with USB C ports, you might be disappointed to find that the Unifying dongle only comes in USB A.

There are a couple of reasons for the dongle not being USB C: first is that while more and more ultraportable laptops are ditching the USB A in favor of the sleeker, potentially more capable USB C, most users still have USB A ports on their laptops and many don’t have a USB C port on their laptops or especially desktop computers. The second reason is a bit more nuanced! A USB C dongle would be absolutely tiny! Unless given a significant length to stick out of the laptop, it would be very difficult to remove as there’s not enough surface for your fingers to grip onto! Also, let’s not forget that even the USB A dongle is so small that you can lose it easily, imagine how easily you would lose a much smaller USB C dongle!

Business application

An unexpected use-case scenario for the Unifying receiver is how it can be used to set up multiple mice and keyboards at the same time. There is also the bonus of saving up a port on all your employees’ notebooks. You can consult the retailer for how you can set up multiple Logitech Unifying-enabled mice and keyboards efficiently through Logitech’s Unifying Multi-Connect Utility. You can store the extra Unifying receivers for later use separately, or in some cases, secure them inside the mice or keyboards themselves in certain models.

Supported devices

A good number of Logitech mice and keyboards feature a Unifying receiver out of the box. From the premium Logitech Craft, MX Master 3 and MX Anywhere 3 to the keyboard and mouse combos such as MK540, to the single keyboards such as K780 and K580, to Logitech’s entry level mice such as M325 or M235. You still need to check the specification of the model you want to purchase to make sure it features a Unifying receiver.

Conclusion

When it comes to wireless keyboard and mouse connectivity, whether it’s the ultra-fast and hyper-responsive, virtually zero-input lag wireless gaming mice dongles to their more general-purpose Unifying-enabled peripherals, Logitech has always had something extra to say when it came to its wireless connectivity. Logitech’s Unifying receiver remains a unique take on mice and keyboards with a USB dongle.
